The environment , wildlife and animal welfare and associated challenges in Iran are largely disregarded by the current regime , which demonstrate a notable deficiency in scientific and technical expertise within this domain on the management level. Furthermore, distinguishing environmental issues as matters of national security precludes the engagement of qualified professionals in addressing these concerns. Consequently, effective environmental management remains conspicuously absent from their agenda. This situation is compounded by systemic corruption and the exploitation of natural resources for personal gain, exacerbating the plight of Iran’s environment and wildlife. Examples of such mismanagement, or its absence altogether, include the illicit control over water resources, deforestation such as the destruction of the Hirkani forests, infrastructural developments encroaching upon protected wildlife habitats, and the establishment of industrial facilities in regions already experiencing water scarcity, among numerous others.
Women working as environmental and animal welfare activists is a new and very strong movement that started around 15 years ago in Iran since most of these subjects were neglected by the government and thus were not male-dominated. So, from our perspective, these activities represent a form of civil resistance against patriarchal and kleptocratic systems such as the Islamic regime of Iran.
This system marginalizes women, limiting their rights and opportunities while exploiting natural resources for personal gain. HamAva, with the purpose of making women the agents of change, provides information, education, and tools to everyone, especially women who are environmental and animal rights activists, to challenge this dual oppression by advocating for environmental sustainability, a cause that intersects with broader social justice issues. We do this by creating direct programs or cooperating with trustworthy NGOs that are specialized in this field and work with women-led civil groups in Iran.
We are aiming to empower marginalized communities, amplify voices, and foster civic engagement through projects that we support.
Their activism eventually serves as a potent tool for societal change towards democracy by raising awareness, mobilizing communities, and demanding accountability. Advocates for the environment and animal welfare call for environmental justice, but their desire goes beyond environmental problems; it will serve as an environment to challenge the status quo, demand fair governance, and promote human rights.
We believe that every small project that has a positive effect on the environment and animal welfare would contribute to building a more democratic society by encouraging active citizen participation, challenging patriarchal and corrupt practices, and advocating for policies that prioritize both environmental well-being and gender equality.
Drawing upon the expertise of our members proficient in environmental and social-political domains, we actively engage and provide consulting for the environmental crisis, wildlife, and animal welfare problems that the country faces. By assessing current challenges, we explore how embracing democratic approaches in decision-making and the equitable distribution of infrastructure can lead us towards sustainable solutions. Our focus lies in leveraging diverse perspectives to address environmental issues and advocating for inclusive and participatory processes that foster sustainability for the collective future.
